Our top moving tips when moving to Denver
Residing at one mile above sea level, folks in the Mile High City have 300 days a year of sunshine (don’t forget your sunscreen!). That said, the weather can turn on a dime. More specifically, the temps have the potential to change up to 40 degrees (Fahrenheit) in one day!
After dressing in layers, you’ll be able to get out to enjoy the great outdoors in the high-desert climate with almost 730,000 friendly Denverites.
As you get acclimated to your new home, here’s a few helpful tips and topics to get you started in Denver:
- Acclimating to the Rockies. One thing’s for sure: after relocating, you’ll need an altitude adjustment. Though the skyscrapers in NYC may have been pretty high up, it just doesn’t compare to the elevation of 5,280 feet no matter where you are in Denver (NYC is at 33 feet above sea level, for reference). Enjoying the mountains can be exciting, but getting sick definitely isn’t. Being aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness is key. They can be minor, such as headache, fatigue, and will typically go away within a few days as you adjust. More serious symptoms can worsen over time and include severe headache, nausea, shortness of breath, and difficulty walking. These more severe symptoms are cause for concern and a reason to seek immediate medical care. To stave off altitude sickness, there are some recommendations: stay hydrated, monitor alcohol intake, and take it nice and easy with physical activity until you adjust.
- Big Industry. Much like other tech hub cities, there’s a lot of industry in Denver. Google and HomeAdvisor have set up residence, but there’s aerospace giants there as well including Boeing, Raytheon, and Northrop Grumman. What you might find on your dinner plate may have been a part of the Denver industry scene as well. Agriculture is big business in the billions in Colorado and companies such as Smashburger, Qdoba, and Quizno’s all have headquarters in the Denver area. One other product brings in the green in the Mile High City: the marijuana industry. Regardless of what you work you do to pay your bills, your commute will likely be reasonable at about 25 minutes on average.
- Getting your greens. It’s no secret that the great outdoors plays a big role in the life of a Denver resident. You’ll be delighted by the many greenspaces to enjoy in the city limits, from the Denver Botanic Gardens to around 20,000 acres of parks around the city. If you’re a cyclist, there are about 85 miles of bike paths — and the city ranks among the most bike friendly locations in the nation by the non-profit PeopleForBikes. When the greenspace is covered with snow, your options for outdoor recreation don’t end! For example, you and the family could opt for a quaint snowshoe trip with the city’s parks & recreation. If you’re willing to traverse just outside of the city, you can really see that the sky’s the limit. Take a drive on Rocky Mountain National Park’s Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous highway in the world or go up-up-and-away in a hot air balloon in Boulder or Colorado Springs. Slaking your thirst for adventure is easy in this mountainous city.
- Culture & Entertainment. For starters, Denver’s got all your bases covered when it comes to professional sports. Root for all of your new home teams; Denver’s got you covered with professional football (Denver Broncos), baseball (Colorado Rockies), hockey (Colorado Avalanche), and basketball (Denver Nuggets). Are you a Stephen King fan? All work and no play makes you a dull Denverite. Book an night tour at The Stanley Hotel in Estes, Colorado where theThe Shining was filmed. Live music got you jazzed? Head over about 10 miles outside of the city to the Red Rock Amphitheatre to take in the tunes with an incredible view. If you enjoy brushing up on culture and history, you won’t have to look far either. For the arts, check out the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. Interested in aviation? With a nod to the aerospace industry, Wings over Denver features two locations: the Air and Space Museum as a look into the history of flight and the Exploration of Flight location that seeks to peer into the future of our air and space adventures. If you still can’t get “The Heart Will Go On” out of your head, tour the home of the “Unsinkable” Molly Brown, philanthropist, world traveler, and survivor of the Titanic tragedy to get your history fixed. All this and more awaits you in your new Rocky Mountain home.
- Denver, cost of living. No matter how much you’re bringing home in your paycheck, it’s good to know that Denverites pay a flat income tax at 4.63%. In comparison to other places in the US, it’s pretty middle of the road for income taxes. That’s not the case for other types of taxation. Sales taxes are higher than average in Denver (4.81%) and property taxes go the other direction; they’re a bit lower. On the topic of housing, the average single-family house price has gone up, surpassing the $600,000 mark. If rental housing is what you’re setting your sites on, it’s just over 40% cheaper to rent in Denver than NYC! On average, for a one-bedroom, you’ll likely pay around $1,700 a month or just under $3,000 for a three-bedroom apartment. While many folks drive, residents and visitors alike can use either bus or rail Regional Transit District public transit options to get around town. A local trip fare will run you about $3.00 and a ride on the Airport Rail will run you about $10.50.
