Florida has long been a summer playground for New Yorkers but increasingly they’re leaving behind the subway and noise to move there full time.
What’s not to love about the Sunshine State? Warmer weather, no personal income tax, a lower cost of living than Manhattan, increased living space and do we need to mention the beaches?
From Tallahassee to Jacksonville and Orlando to Miami, Piece of Cake regularly moves New Yorkers to all the major cities and towns of Florida. With a driving time of up to 21 hours, we use our East Coast experience to give professionals, couples, families, students and retirees, a hassle free relocation.
Piece of Cake can professionally pack, load and transport your belongings with real time tracking over the entire journey to Florida and offers a full unpacking service after we’ve arrived at your new home if you need a door to door option.

Our top moving tips when moving to Florida

Our top moving tips when moving to Florida
Palm trees dotted across the state hint that Florida’s one of only two in the country that are considered tropical climates, along with Hawaii. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the states of Alabama and Georgia, much of Florida is at sea level.
There’s no denying, the weather is a huge drawcard for many of its 21 million residents. But there’s so much more to consider about Florida before moving there.
- Tax relief. Floridians don’t pay any state or city personal income tax, capital gains tax, estate tax and on the flipside have easier bankruptcy laws. Combined with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which has made buying a home in New York even more expensive, properties here are now more accessible than in the city that never sleeps.
- Extremes. The state records the highest average temperatures in the country at Key West however it also sees some extreme conditions to be aware of. These include hurricanes, tornadoes, waterspouts, Category 4 storms and more lightning strikes than anywhere else in the country. It also has one of the highest average rainfall rates in the country, so once you settle in, be sure to be prepared for any conditions.
- Cost of Living. Essentials such as food and groceries, housing, utilities, health and transportation are recorded on major indices to be cheaper in Florida than New York City. While you can find some outrageously luxurious properties in centres like Miami Beach, other parts of the city offer affordable alternatives with water views like in Downtown Miami. There are public transit options in all major centres, Amtrak lines, and for travel further afield Florida is home to 7 major airports led by Orlando and Miami.
- Economic Drivers. Unsurprisingly tourism and agriculture are major contributors to the local economy, and phosphate mining is the state’s 3rd largest industry. Government is also a major employer, with 24 military bases in the state and of course NASA at Cape Canaveral. Other major sectors include trade and transportation, business services, health and education services. Coincidentally, Florida has the largest university by enrollment in the country at the University of Florida, while the state was recently ranked 7th in America for quality education at all levels.
- The great outdoors. No matter where you are in Florida you are never more than 60 miles away from a body of salt water but you might want to get a car as Florida has more than 12,000 miles of highway traversing the state. From touring wetlands, to visiting theme parks like Universal Studios Orlando and Walt Disney World, snorkelling in the Florida Keys, hiking the National Florida Scenic Trail or the lush Everglades there’s no shortage of adventure in Florida. If none of that is your idea of relaxing, Florida also has more golf courses than any other state. Whatever you choose, don’t forget the bug spray.
- Food to match the lifestyle. Florida’s known for its fresh oranges and produces most of the citrus fruit in the United States. Other quintessential cuisine includes key lime pie, seafood like fresh crabs, fish, clams, shrimp, and oysters, Cubano’s (or Cuban Sandwiches) and Caribbean classics like fried conch. Could they be any more different to New York hotdogs and bagels?
