Our top moving tips when moving to NYC
Winter, spring, summer, and fall — You’ll enjoy them all in NYC! The steamy days of a humid summer may be more familiar to Floridians, but chilly winter temps (average high of 39F; low of 26F in January) and typical snowfall can be quite a change for those relocating from the South.
No matter the weather, get ready to share the sidewalk and live out loud with over 8 million fellow New Yorkers. NYC is the most densely populated city in the country; per square mile, it comes out to about 27,000 people.
There’s lots to know about relocating to New York City, but here’s a few points to get you started:
- Transportation. You may want to rethink staking your claim on a parking spot when relocating to NYC. The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) boasts 24-hour subway service as well as buses, trains, and ferries to take you all across the boroughs. And, it’s pretty affordable: a one-way ride on the subway currently costs just under $3. If navigating the spaghetti lines of a transit map seems intimidating, use a map app on your smartphone and select the public transit option when searching for directions. If you’re ready to ditch the drive, other options for getting around the city include hailing a cab, arranging for a ride share service, or renting a Citibike.
- Cost of Living. New York City boasts a major cost of living hike compared to Miami. On average, living in NYC is over 100% more expensive. It consistently ranks as one of the most expensive places to reside — right up there with San Francisco; Brooklyn and Manhattan are the pricey standouts among the 5 boroughs. The biggest factors that influence the increase in cost of living when relocating to NYC is housing and rent. And, the price may follow you all the way to places like the iconic Macy’s flagship department store in Herald Square. NYC sales tax is 8.875% on all goods except for many grocery store food items, prescription medications, and clothing or shoes under $110. - Arts & Culture. It’s no secret that the city that never sleeps is a cultural hub. As it reopens to full capacity, the Broadway theatres will be curtains up beginning Fall 2021. Cruise around Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and you’ll pass by the Metropolitan Museum of Art with its fountains out front, the National Museum of Design, and the architectural masterpiece that is the Guggenheim Museum (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright). Taking in the shows and seeing the sites can come with a price tag, but residents should be on the lookout for deals! For example, applying for the IDNYC card, available to all residents of the five boroughs, will grant you access to many sweet discounts — including free year-long memberships to over 35 cultural institutions of your choice (including the Museum of Modern Art, Bronx Zoo, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, and the American Museum of Natural History)! There are also free or reduced entry days for many of these locations and bargain Broadway show tickets as well.
- FOOD. FOOD. FOOD. From Michelin-starred dining establishments to dollar NY style pizza slices, each borough has its own flavor. The Murray Hill neighborhood in Manhattan is commonly referred to as “Curry Hill” with many Indian restaurants. Down for some dim sum? Manhattan’s Chinatown is ripe with choices. Flock to Brooklyn’s Smorgasburg, features open-air food truck-style eateries at a number of hang-out worthy locations. If the moon hits your eyes like two big pizza pies, head to Bronx’s Arthur Avenue: the northernmost borough’s Little Italy. That’s just a little slice of what the city is serving up. Seasonally speaking, you’ll also likely happen upon a number of street fairs, boasting Thai ice tea and fresh roasted corn, common in the summertime (but there are winter markets to check out as well). If you’re feeling both patriotic and particularly hungry, make sure to catch the annual hotdog eating contest held every July 4th on Coney Island.
- Parks & Recreation. You may be leaving the beautiful beaches and outdoors of Florida but in NYC you can have it all: the metropolitan experience filled with all nature has to offer. Hike, bike, and lay out on the sand in NYC’s ocean beaches, botanical gardens, natural forest parks, wetlands, and miles of bike lanes. NYC parks also host outdoor movie screenings, fitness classes, kid-friendly events, and free concerts featuring major musical artists — even in Central Park! Speaking of the famed green space in the middle of Manhattan, you can also grab a blanket and a picnic basket to experience the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park performances. If you have a canine friend, there are designated dog runs and off-leash hours at certain NYC parks. This city’s green spaces are fun for the whole family.
