New neighborhood, new you, right? Well, it’s certainly true if you plan on moving to NoMad. Short for “North of Madison Square Park,” this rebranded neck of the downtown Manhattan woods is a new spot that’s staking its claim on an up-and-coming identity for the area. It balances the fast-paced work day (and into the night) with more relaxed weekends, tipping the scales in favor of young families who want to enjoy a little bit of everything the city has to offer. If you’re on the hunt for luxury condos, on-trend lounges and bars, and chill vibes to end your “work hard” ethic, this is the part of NYC for you.

Our Top NoMad Moving Tips

Contained within the streets between the Empire State and Flatiron buildings, NoMad stretches from 30th Street to about 23rd Street from north to south. East to west, you’re looking at Lexington Ave to about 6th Avenue. Looking at the map in a clockwise fashion, NoMad is surrounded by Midtown South, Rose Hill, Flatiron District, and Chelsea.

Now that you know about the bounds and what surrounds the neighborhood, it’s good to take some time to better know your new home. We’ve got some key details to share about NoMad for new residents:

  • Cost of living. To live in this desirable neighborhood, you’ll have to pay a pretty penny. In terms of where you might live, you may choose from high-rise luxury apartment buildings, condos, co-ops and some pre-war and brownstone walk-ups, which tend to be a little less expensive. If you’re hoping to own one of these spaces, you may be looking among listings with a median price of $2.5 million (that’s about $2.1k per square foot). Renting downtown is also at a premium; a one-bedroom NoMad apartment will run you somewhere in the ballpark of $4,850 to just over $8,000. Even with that said, the neighborhood reports low vacancy rates. So even if the price is right for you, there may not be a space to call your own available. Make sure to keep refreshing those listings!
  • Public transit. There may be cheaper places to call home elsewhere in the city and even in the borough, but what will be hard to beat is how centrally located this part of Manhattan is. You’ll be able to choose from the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s (MTA) 4, 6, N, R, F, and M trains. Having access to this many subway lines is a luxury in and of itself, making your ability to get around no sweat. If you’re not already familiar with the subway and public transit system, it’ll take you about about 22 minutes to get to Columbus Circle (at the southwest corner of Central Park), about 15 minutes to get to Grand Central, and if you’re headed to New Jersey, it’s about 30 minutes by public transit from NoMad. And, at $2.75 per one-way ride, you’ll be saving yourself a few pennies while commuting at least!
  • Eating like a NoMad resident. You won’t have to look far to find great eats in the neighborhood, from fine dining to a casual meal. For starters, if you’re hoping to impress your dinner date, you may make time to pencil in an evening repast at Scarpetta for a special meal. You could also flatter your taste buds with flavor and kindness at Eleven Madison Park for a plant-based tasting menu. The dollars you spend towards a meal in the restaurant overlooking Madison Square Park goes to the Eleven Madison Park Truck, which serves meals to New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity. To have options from burgers to pasta, L’Adresse may fit the bill. However, if only sushi will satisfy, Sushi Muse is a must stop for snow crab rolls and miso soup. Perhaps you’re on the hunt for a New York classic. If so, then heading to the original Shake Shack location within Madison Square Park is an al fresco dining situation you just can’t miss (who can resist those crinkle-cut fries?). There’s delicious food a-plenty in NoMad and you’ll soon find what makes the cut for your plate.
  • No(t)Mad at the surroundings. Of course, we’d be remiss not to mention one of the best features of NoMad: Madison Square Park. Within its six acres, you’ll enjoy many neighborhood events among lush green lawns, a dog run, and even a playground. If you’d like to stroll a bit further, NoMad is just a short walk away from both the East and West River Greenway for more outdoor recreation opportunities. If the interior is much more your domain, then you’re in for a treat. NoMad is home to the New York Design Center, which boasts 100 different showrooms for various types of furniture among 16 floors. This is the place to find cutting-edge interior design styles you just won’t find anywhere else. Another spot to spend an afternoon indoors in NoMad is the National Museum of Mathematics. A visit there will help you (and maybe your little ones) grow an appreciation for the patterns, structures, and algorithms that surround our lives. Really, there’s something for everyone in this part of the city.

From start to finish my move was a great experience. I immediately got a quote. The scheduling was easy, and they provided me with information regarding insurance coverage (and took care of the paperwork my building provided). The move itself went like clockwork. The movers arrived on time and texted me when they were on their way with an ETA to the delivery site. They moved everything up the 3 flights of stairs into my apartment quickly and safely. A great company that provides great service at very reasonable rates.

They were awesome! They take everything apart and then re assemble for you. They wrap up your tvs and glass shit professionally. They take the legs off your couch so it fits through doors. Everything's wrapped until it's inside so it doesn't ruin the paint on your walls if they rub against them. Not even a wine glass was chipped.

They came at zero hour after the moving company I initially hired and paid a deposit to canceled. I was freaking out about my move not happening at all but they did get this done and my stuff arrived more or less intact and accounted for. They handled changes and snafus gracefully and earned their money. Hopefully I won't be moving again for a long time but if I get forced into that again, I'll remember this experience.

Was very easy to call and set up a move. The price was good to. I had some mix-ups and needed to add items and even change the date, but they were able to easily accommodate. Day of the move the crew was super nice and professional. They quickly packed up the entire apartment with ease, I didn't really lift a finger. They made what is usually a stressful day pretty easy.

I was amazed how efficient the guys were. they sorted out my items to be removed and, went straight to work. We will definitely use A Piece of Cake multiple times in the future until, we officially make the BIG MOVE! THANKS FOR YOUR HELP....YES, IT WAS A PIECE OF CAKE! NO STRESS INVOLVED...JUST SWEET SERVINGS.....

Piece of Cake Moving was phenomenal to work with. From the initial sale, to the follow up, to the day of delivery. The moving crew themselves were a dream to work with. I honestly don't know how they managed to move everything we'd accumulated over the years in such a short (relatively) period of time. Will definitely use them again (in hopefully 7-8 years).

Jose and his team did a great job moving my husband and I. They arrived on time and were very organized. They were professional, courteous and moved us quickly. They wrapped our furniture very well. They took apart and put together our bed and sectional couch. We were very pleased and would recommend them.

Nicholas and Giga made this moving experience an easy one, especially since I was moving alone. They were punctual, kind and very thoughtful. When we arrived to my apartment? They helped unwrap all the packing tape and set up my furniture and bed - something that would take probably days for me. They delivered excellent service and went beyond my expectations.

Excellent moving company. I hired 2 men for 2 hours to complete 1 bedroom move. They arrived early, were extremely efficient, helpful, personable, strong, and careful. They finished the job with 45 min to spare. Everything went extremely smoothly. I would hire Piece of Cake again.

Great move with POC movers! I rented their pink bins which was an excellent choice, they provide plenty of packing paper, zip ties, and tags. My team arrived right at the start of their arrival window and quickly and safely packed all my bins and furniture into their truck. The team just as efficiently unloaded everything, leaving the bins in the labeled rooms and re assembling my bed frame. I definitely recommend renting their bins. I would definitely use Piece of Cake movers again and recommend them to a friend.

The movers were so professional, friendly and quick. They took such great care of my stuff. I happened to move on one of the hottest days of the year and felt so bad. They were gracious and so still worked quickly. Pls make sure you tip your movers good, they work hard and were really great!

I had made an appointment from another moving company that completely screwed me over the day of. I called every moving company in New York freaking out, and Piece of Cake was willing to come at 7pm to help me move, last minute. I genuinely don't know what I would have done if they didn't go out of their way to fit me in. Anytime in the future I will be using piece of cake moving! They boxed and unboxed so fast and efficiently, it was amazing!
