Our top moving tips when moving to Pittsburgh, PA
Pittsburgh is also known as Steel City as it was once the centre of the American Steel industry. However it’s economy has diversified markedly in recent decades into areas such as science, health, biomedical technology and finance.
Several Fortune 500 companies have a presence in the city including PNC Financial Services, The Kraft Heinz Company and PPG Industries. Google has also taken up residence in the former Nabisco factory. New Yorkers arriving in Pittsburgh for the first time, should know about other trends in the city including:
- Cost of living. From housing to food, everything is more affordable in ‘the Burgh’ than New York and also 1% lower than the national average. The cost of health and housing here is also lower than the average cost for the state of Pennsylvania. If you’re a budding homeowner, local realtors estimate the current median purchase price at about $165,000, suddenly putting your dreams back within reach. If you’re not planning to buy, the median rent for a one bedroom apartment is about $720 a month. Pennsylvania also has relatively low income tates. While you will find a drop in the value of the average wage in this city, there’s downward pressure on every other cost to balance it out.
- Transportation. Now that parking’s not such a problem, especially if you’re moving from New York City, you’ll probably want the convenience of a car to get around.Fuel prices are slightly higher than the national average, but that is consistent with any large city. Alternatively a monthly ticket for the public transit system, known as The Port Authority of Allegheny County, costs $97 at full fare or $48 at a discount.
- Friendly and relaxed. It might take a while to get used to passers by wishing you good morning or neighbors being friendly but you can expect a far more laid back atmosphere in Pittsburgh. Maybe it’s all those rolling hills and rivers that keep them zen. There are 3 rivers running through the town: The Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio. There’s also a lower crime rate and of course less road rage with fewer people competing for space. While Pittsburgh is a city of just 300,000 people, the entire Metropolitan Area takes in 2.3 million people when you include other urban and rural neighbourhoods.
- Education hub. Education is a major contributor to the local economy and the biggest education employer in the city is the University of Pittsburgh which has one of the nation’s largest research programs. New Yorkers will recognise the name Carnegie all over the city, including at the Science Centre, two Museums and the Carnegie Mellon University. Other major higher education institutions include Duquesne University and Carlow University. The district also operates 54 public schools serving 23,0000 children. There are also several private schools in the city including Oakland Catholic High School and Yeshiva Schools.
- Serious about sport. Pittsburgh has genuine form in American sport history, having hosted the first baseball World Series in 1903 and the first professional football game in 1882. It has several professional teams including the Pirates, Steelers, Penguins, Riverhounds and the Steel City Yellow Jackets. If you never really got into live sport in New York, this is the place to do it.
