Piece of Cake’s Los Angeles Moving Tips

  • Getting around. L.A. is just over 500 square miles and contains about five counties worth of residents in the metro area. So, it may come as no surprise that few people walk to get to where they’re going. Public transportation is available, courtesy of LA Metro. The system offers travel by bus, mini shuttle and even a light rail system. However, it’s still expanding its reach within the metro area. Thus, travel by personal car is pretty big in this SoCal spot (with high average gas prices to match). If you plan on driving like so many Angelenos, it’s wise to set your expectations accordingly. Plus, you’ll need to get your vehicle tested for emissions as a new resident and once every other year in L.A. Smog is a pretty big deal in the city, so testing emissions is key. Also, getting from one part of the city to another is not typically a short commute. For instance, a drive from Santa Monica to Downtown L.A. could have you behind the wheel for over an hour, even though the two locations are only about 15 miles apart. If you’d rather not be the one to navigate the “non-stop rush hour” traffic on the complicated freeway system yourself, rideshare or bike share services are popular there as well. For travel in and out of the city, you’re in luck. The LAX International Airport is the second largest in the country with over 100 domestic and 85 international routes, you can go anywhere your heart desires and come back home when you’re ready.
  • Take a hike. It’s not all bright lights and red carpets in this star-studded southern California city. Getting out into nature is something many Angelenos and visitors to the area do regularly. And, there may just be a hiking trail for anyone who traverses these parts. Many of them are easy to moderate, so you won’t have to worry if you’re new to nature hiking. Plus, it may allow you to see a different side of Los Angeles. For instance, the 3-mile Runyon Canyon loop will run you past million-dollar properties and fantastic views of the Hollywood sign. You can also take your boots in the direction of the oft-featured Bronson Canyon, which served as the backdrop to many scenes in Invasion of the Body Snatchers and even the 1960’s Batman TV series. If your legs must lead to a body of water, there are also several trails that offer views and close proximity to lakes and waterfalls. So, dress in layers and pack your water bottle for a day hike adventure. Within driving distance of the city, there are also natural wonders in droves featured at several of our nation’s national parks.
  • Cost of living. Being the home of Hollywood and big-time entertainment, you may expect that residing in the City of Angels isn’t cheap. And, you would be correct, however there’s a bit more to it than that. Let’s start with housing costs. Over half of Angelenos rent their homes(63% to be exact). The average cost of rent for an apartment in LA is $2,786 a month with an average square footage of 789 square feet. However, that monthly cost can vary widely based on the neighborhood you settle down in. Vermont Knolls and Vermont Vista have below-average monthly rents at about $1,522 a month. On the higher end, Historic South-Central, University Park, and North of Montana neighborhoods range in rents between $4,530 to $4,622. If you’re in the market to purchase, you can join the 37% of city residents who have found the median home cost to currently be around $891,820. Much like apartments, those prices can range quite a bit depending on location and size. Beyond how much you’ll pay for your home, what about other costs associated with being a LA and California state resident? Well, there’s the state income tax. It’s at a whopping 13.3%, topping out the list of one of the 10 states with the highest income tax in the nation. When you’re checking out your receipts, but not for groceries, you see a 9.25% combined state and city sales tax added onto your final bill.
  • Let’s have a ball. L.A may be well known for the glitz and glamor, but it can throw down for a game, too. No need to be worried you won’t be able to root for the home team, there are some big players in many professional leagues. It’s such a big city that it’s got more than one team per league in some cases. Got “Take me out to the ball game” stuck in your head? Grab some tickets to cheer on the L.A. Dodgers at Elysian Park or the Los Angeles Angels at Angels Stadium in Anaheim (just about 30 miles away). If you like it hot or cold, you can visit the Staples Center in your L.A. Lakers (NBA) or L.A. Clippers (NBA) gear OR sit rinkside to cheer on the L.A. Kings (NHL) as they score on the ice. Fans of American football have their choice of supporting the Rams or Chargers (NFL). But if you are particular to futbol (soccer), then you’ll want to get your kicks at an L.A. Galaxy or Los Angeles Football Club match. Really, there’s a team for everyone in L.A. to root for. If you’re a good sport though, they’re all your home teams.
  • Industries, film and beyond. Perhaps what’s bringing you to SoCal is a job in the film and entertainment industry. There’s certainly plenty of folks who flock to L.A. to pursue a position in these fields, with or without stars in their eyes. However, there’s more than movie work that occurs in L.A.. So if you’re not in that industry, don’t fret. Aerospace is big in this city, with industry leaders such as Boeing, Space X, and Lockheed. With the area’s big research institutions, such as UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Hospital system, bioscience is another key industry exploring the cure to HIV, robotic limbs, and much more. From the top designers like Chanel down to mall favorites like Forever 21, L.A. is also a fashion hub in the U.S. From the textile manufacturing to the design aspects, it’s very much a passion here. Trade, Information Technology, Food manufacturing, and Transportation are also some big industries. All this to say: many seek to find their fortune in this sunny locale, and not all of those professions necessarily take place on the stage.

From start to finish my move was a great experience. I immediately got a quote. The scheduling was easy, and they provided me with information regarding insurance coverage (and took care of the paperwork my building provided). The move itself went like clockwork. The movers arrived on time and texted me when they were on their way with an ETA to the delivery site. They moved everything up the 3 flights of stairs into my apartment quickly and safely. A great company that provides great service at very reasonable rates.

They were awesome! They take everything apart and then re assemble for you. They wrap up your tvs and glass shit professionally. They take the legs off your couch so it fits through doors. Everything's wrapped until it's inside so it doesn't ruin the paint on your walls if they rub against them. Not even a wine glass was chipped.

They came at zero hour after the moving company I initially hired and paid a deposit to canceled. I was freaking out about my move not happening at all but they did get this done and my stuff arrived more or less intact and accounted for. They handled changes and snafus gracefully and earned their money. Hopefully I won't be moving again for a long time but if I get forced into that again, I'll remember this experience.

Was very easy to call and set up a move. The price was good to. I had some mix-ups and needed to add items and even change the date, but they were able to easily accommodate. Day of the move the crew was super nice and professional. They quickly packed up the entire apartment with ease, I didn't really lift a finger. They made what is usually a stressful day pretty easy.

  • star star star star star

I was amazed how efficient the guys were. they sorted out my items to be removed and, went straight to work. We will definitely use A Piece of Cake multiple times in the future until, we officially make the BIG MOVE! THANKS FOR YOUR HELP....YES, IT WAS A PIECE OF CAKE! NO STRESS INVOLVED...JUST SWEET SERVINGS.....

Piece of Cake Moving was phenomenal to work with. From the initial sale, to the follow up, to the day of delivery. The moving crew themselves were a dream to work with. I honestly don't know how they managed to move everything we'd accumulated over the years in such a short (relatively) period of time. Will definitely use them again (in hopefully 7-8 years).

Jose and his team did a great job moving my husband and I. They arrived on time and were very organized. They were professional, courteous and moved us quickly. They wrapped our furniture very well. They took apart and put together our bed and sectional couch. We were very pleased and would recommend them.

Nicholas and Giga made this moving experience an easy one, especially since I was moving alone. They were punctual, kind and very thoughtful. When we arrived to my apartment? They helped unwrap all the packing tape and set up my furniture and bed - something that would take probably days for me. They delivered excellent service and went beyond my expectations.

Excellent moving company. I hired 2 men for 2 hours to complete 1 bedroom move. They arrived early, were extremely efficient, helpful, personable, strong, and careful. They finished the job with 45 min to spare. Everything went extremely smoothly. I would hire Piece of Cake again.

Great move with POC movers! I rented their pink bins which was an excellent choice, they provide plenty of packing paper, zip ties, and tags. My team arrived right at the start of their arrival window and quickly and safely packed all my bins and furniture into their truck. The team just as efficiently unloaded everything, leaving the bins in the labeled rooms and re assembling my bed frame. I definitely recommend renting their bins. I would definitely use Piece of Cake movers again and recommend them to a friend.

The movers were so professional, friendly and quick. They took such great care of my stuff. I happened to move on one of the hottest days of the year and felt so bad. They were gracious and so still worked quickly. Pls make sure you tip your movers good, they work hard and were really great!

  • star star star star star

I had made an appointment from another moving company that completely screwed me over the day of. I called every moving company in New York freaking out, and Piece of Cake was willing to come at 7pm to help me move, last minute. I genuinely don't know what I would have done if they didn't go out of their way to fit me in. Anytime in the future I will be using piece of cake moving! They boxed and unboxed so fast and efficiently, it was amazing!
