Our top moving tips when moving to Upstate NY
As you’ve likely become accustomed to experiencing all four seasons in NYC, moving upstate will be a similar experience. Winter, spring, summer, and fall — you’ll experience them all. What will likely be different is snowfall. Upstate NY is home to several cities that regularly report the most snowfall in the country. The 200 or so inches per year are likely due to the lake effect of cold winds off of Lake Ontario that borders on the north. So, you may want to upgrade your cold weather gear. Upstate summers are warm and humid but not as severe, which might be a nice change of pace from sweating it out in the city streets.
There’s definitely more to know than seasonal climate differences as you make your way Upstate, so here’s a few details to get familiar with before your move:
- It’s a regional thing. As a state that’s on par with small countries as far as its size, it’s no wonder NY is actually broken up into regions. Outside of the NYC metropolitan area and Long Island, Upstate NY comprises about 9 regions and you’ll find gems to discover in each of them whether you visit or settle down in them. You can ascend the mountains in the Adirondack region or lace up your ice skates to glide along the rink at the Empire State Plaza in the Capital region. If your relocation takes you towards the Catskills, you’ll be eating farm fresh near the hallowed rock and roll ground around Woodstock, NY. Baseball fans will rejoice at the discovery of the game’s birthplace in Central NY’s Cooperstown. Going out to the Niagara-Frontier region will have you fawning over the famed falls there. Perhaps you’d rather get off the beaten path to enjoy quaint boutiques and river views in the city-adjacent Hudson Valley or taste the local wine varietals in the Finger Lakes or Chautauqua-Allegheny regions. No matter where you find yourself, there’s something for everyone.
- Seeing the Upstate sites. There’s a lot of land to cover up there, so there’s way more to list than is possible in this space. However, making your way Upstate means adding a few local spots to your “must-see” list in terms of staycations and exploring your new home space. A great day for families, or a romantic date, can be had at the vintage hand-carved carousels in Binghamton, NY. You can plan a visit to the luxurious Boldt Castle in Alexandra Bay, NY, intended as a summer home for the wife of wealthy hotelier George C. Boldt. Of course, you can make your yearly sojourn to the New York State Fair in Syracuse to fill up on fried foods and rides. If you’re a serious collector, or just an amaeteur glass aficionado, a trip to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY is a must. For those who’s history fix isn’t cured by a museum, plan on going to Ithaca, NY’s annual Darwin Days, a five-day celebration of the famed naturalist featuring discussions, exhibitions, and panels to further explore the natural world around us.
- Cost of living. You’re likely familiar with higher costs associated with day-to-day life having been a resident of NYC. Though the cost of living is lower in Upstate NY, the state overall is more expensive than the national average. To that end, you’ll still be subject to the highest state tax burden in the country at 15.9% (for reference, Tennessee has one of the lowest tax burdens at 7.6%) Some of the higher costs of living in NY are due to housing and transportation. As you’re browsing the costs of purchasing or renting your next address in the various Upstate regions, you’ll find affordable living options (comparatively) in the towns and cities without missing out on local amenities. For reference, the median housing price is currently around $380k and about $1,200 a month for a two bedroom apartment. It’s more expensive than other parts of the country, but certainly less expensive than most of the five boroughs. In terms of transportation, using a public transit option may depend on where you settle down. If you’re settling down in the Niagara-Frontier region, you can use NFTA buses and rail options where the standard fare is $2. If you’re moving to Rochester, NY, the bus system there offers $1 one-way rides, or a $3 all-day pass. Beyond local commuting, there are bus options within the state, such as Greyhound, MegaBus, and Trailways (which can be quite affordable if you purchase your ticket in advance). Generally speaking though, many people do drive personal vehicles. And it’s no wonder, because a drive between cities across the state can be hours-long.
- NY in its natural state. You’ll find all types of terrain upstate, beyond the concrete jungle to the south. In the north and eastern parts, you’ll find the state’s mountainous region in the Catskills and Adirondacks. The other side of the state is much flatter (think Buffalo). If the city-slicker in you wants to branch out, you’ll find plenty of options to commune with nature. Just outside of the metropolitan area is Bear Mountain State Park. There you’ll find fishing, swimming, picnic areas, and plenty of hiking. There’s even a zoo! The Catskills have hiking trails a-plenty, some of which are ski and snowmobile friendly in the winter months. Speaking of the time of potential snowfall, there are myriad options for snowshoeing and skiing throughout the state. If you don’t consider yourself a landlubber, you’ll be happy with the many bodies of water to enjoy. Take a steamboat cruise on Lake George during brunch or take in the gorge-ous views of the falls of the Finger Lakes. Taughannock Falls State Park features one of the tallest single falls east of the Rockies. Take a moment to catch your breath, because there’s so much more to explore in the great wide Upstate NY outdoors.
- NY industries. Maybe you’ve already established yourself professionally in NYC. However, knowing the major industries throughout the state may help you find just the right region for you outside the metropolitan area. The biggest industries include agribusiness, biotech and life sciences, cleantech and renewable energy, breweries, wineries, and distilleries, digital gaming, distribution, financial services and insurance, software and digital media, tourism, and transportation equipment among others. Of course, some industries have more of a foothold in certain areas of the state than others. For instance, the state capital Albany, NY is home to plenty of state government (including within the state SUNY education system) and healthcare jobs. Similar industries can be found in Buffalo, NY in the private and public sectors. The home of the Eastman Kodak Company is in Rochester, NY, though education, health care, and some manufacturing jobs are the most prevalent. Narrowing down your search to the specific city or town you plan to move to will of course help you inform your job search scope.
