Our top Kingsbridge Moving Tips
This sweet-spot neighborhood is bounded in the Bronx by a few major roadways. To the north, you’ll find Manhattan College Parkway. West 230th Street is at the southern end of Kingsbridge. Major Deegan Expressway is along the east side and it stretches all the way to Irwin Avenue to the west.
There’s more to know beyond the bounds of this Bronx neighborhood, so we wanted to share a few details to get you started:
- Family friendly. If you’re moving with your family or planning on starting one, this neighborhood has plenty of amenities for you. Of course, a major draw is nearby daycare offerings, urgent care centers, and schools, several of which are highly-rated from elementary to high school level. After school lets out, a trip to the park can always be a great way for the little ones to get the extra energy out. The good news is that green space isn’t that far away either. Just to the west of Irwin Avenue, you can bring the family crew (and your doggies, too) to Ewen Park for a frolic in the dog run and to shoot a few hoops on the court. If you’re a fan of lacrosse, softball, or soccer, you can see the Manhattan College Jaspers play at Gaelic Park, located in the northern part of the neighborhood. Also, to the north is NYC’s 3rd largest recreational area: VanCortlandt Park. Great for a weekend trip, spend the day biking, playing bocce ball, and barbequing (and so much more) there. Once everyone has worked up an appetite from all the recreating, you’ll have your choice of grocery stories. ALDI and Morton Williams can be found in the neighborhood. If picking up a few dinner staples isn’t in the cards, you could try out one of the many Latin-inspired restaurants in the area or grab some pub grub at the Bronx Ale House.
- Commuting in and out of the neighborhood. Like royalty, you’ll have a great many options to choose from when you decide you need to get in, out, and around the city. Kingsbridge in particular scores a little lower than some in the walkable and bikeable accessibility than some other neighborhoods (66 and 69 out of a 100, respectively). However, public transit in the area scores a perfect 100. There are a number of Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) bus stops and getting to and from Manhattan is easy by taking the 1 subway train. Taking the bus or train for travel within the five boroughs will only set you back $2.75 per one way ride, so it’s a pretty economical way to get around. For more extensive commuting on public transit, you can also easily catch the MetroNorth train stop in the Marble Hill neighborhood on the Hudson Line just south of Kingsbridge to get you to where you need to go Upstate or downtown. If driving a personal vehicle is the only way to go, living in this neighborhood puts you in proximity to a number of major roadways such as Major Deegan Expressway, Irwin Avenue, and Manhattan College Parkway.
- Affordable housing. This neighborhood boasts a few assets, particularly as it’s close to Manhattan for those frequent visitors. Another reason people are flocking to Kingsbridge: you won’t pay a king’s ransom for a place to call your own. Many folks have found that renting an apartment here is among the most affordable in the city. For reference, the average cost of rent for a one-bedroom apartment is around $1,700 a month, which is quite a bit lower than some of the typical rents you would encounter in downtown Manhattan or Brooklyn. What’s more, rent here has actually gone down very slightly in the past year, whereas rents in other parts of the city have increased. There are some detached homes available if you’re looking to buy a place though, and the median price is also below average for NYC. The median sale price for a home was most recently at $365K, though prices can range from $135K to $2.3 million.
