Our Top Jackson Heights Moving Tips
This neighborhood begins with LaGuardia Airport to the north and spans south all the way to Roosevelt Avenue. From east to west, it stretches from Junction Boulevard to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Nearby neighborhoods include Elmhurst, Woodside, North Corona, Astoria, and Ditmars-Steinway.
Beyond its bounds, there’s quite a bit to get acquainted with in your new home. So, here’s a few details to get you started:
- Cost of living. Relatively speaking, city livin’ is much more affordable in these parts than in some other neighborhoods and boroughs. You won’t have to sacrifice space or style for price though. Among the available abodes you’ll find pre-war Tudor, Italiante, and Georgian Revival buildings, row houses, co-ops, and one- to two- family homes. If you’d like to make one your own, you’ll be looking at a median listing price of $399.5k as a reference point in your search. Renters will be looking at a monthly cost of around or a little over $2k per month for a one-bedroom apartment (lower than many spots in Manhattan). When you’re not at home base, you’ll find that the affordable costs will follow with economical public transit options. The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) offers bus (such as the Q29, Q33, Q32, Q49, Q70) and subway options (7 train) in the area, all with a $2.75 price tag per one-way ride. If you’re a frequent rider, you may even consider getting an unlimited MetroCard that’ll cost you $33 per week or $127 for a month.
- Neighborhood history. Designated a historic district in 1993, Jackson Heights is one of the nation’s first and biggest planned co-op and garden apartment communities. Between 1914 and 1939, construction of apartment buildings surrounding private parks and block-long co-ops that included access to greenspace for multi-family dwellings took place. The idea of this garden community was pursued in contrast to the grittier urban living environments at the time. That’s not where the history ends though. Within one of these garden apartments, the well-known game of Scrabble was born. Though there’s some contention around when the game was initially conceived, Alfred Mosher Butts created the game in his home somewhere between 1931 and 1933. In 2011, a street sign was erected to commemorate the birthplace of the board game at 35th Avenue and 81st Street.
- Global plates. Being a cultural melting pot, Jackson Heights bubbles over on cuisines from all over the world, particularly with South American and Asian flavors. Where to begin? Perhaps a stop at the local Jackson Diner is order – but it’s not your typical greasy spoon fare. This neighborhood favorite serves up fresh Indian dishes from samosa chaat to tandoori chicken. Or maybe you’ve got a taste for Pakistani? Taste of Lahore on Northern Boulevard will have you sampling Ashari chicken and gajraila (a carrot pudding). End the meal with a trip to Cannelle Patisserie for classic French pastries or La Gran Urguaya Bakery for a South American treat. You might also plan for a lunch date in the near future at El Toum for the Lebanese take on salmon shish kabob, falafel, and baklava. Another can’t miss special dish is the fresh (and affordable) corn arepas from the local food celebrity, the Arepa Lady. And these are just a handful of the spots you’ll come across in this part of the city.
- Nightlife. Though the area isn’t particularly known for late night highlights, music and dancing in the evening hours can be found in Jackson Heights. To add to the historic nature of the neighborhood, Friend’s Tavern on Roosevelt Avenue is one of the oldest gay bars in Queens. If you’re looking for a dinner-and-a-show kinda night, some live entertainment and Colombian cuisine at D’antigua can get you moving. Those ready to get to steppin’ won’t want to forget their dancing shoes if they’re headed for a night of salsa at Hairos Night Club. For a real NYC dance club experience, make sure to pencil in a night within the 3,000 square feet of partying at Club Evolution. If dancing into the wee hours of the morning isn’t your way to spend an evening though, you may find sanctuary at a lively, but relaxing jazz performance at Terraza 7.
