Our top Five Points Moving Tips
Situated in lower Manhattan, Five Points can be found within the bounds that start at Canal Street to the north and extend to Worth Street to the south. East to west, you start at Bowery to go all the way to Lafayette Street. Though it’s not an official neighborhood, it’s in the midst of a number of centrally located areas that make getting where you’re going a breeze.
There’s more than a few things to know about Five Points beyond its bounds. We’ve got a few pointers to get you started:
- Housing costs. One thing is for sure, you’ll want to get a sense of what it’ll cost you to live in Five Points. You’ll have your pick of renting or owning if you choose. Most of the prices are based on recognized nearby neighborhoods housing costs. For instance, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Chinatown is about $2,310 a month, but you could be looking at about $4k a month in Little Italy. On the other hand, the median sale cost for a home in the area is between $970k in Chinatown and $1M in the Lower East Side.
- Getting to and from Five Points. Outside of housing costs, you may want to be sure that there’s options to get you where you’re going when you’re not at home. The good news is that because this area is centrally located, you’ll have ready access to public transportation. The B, D, J, Z, N, Q, R, W, 4, 5, and 6 subway lines have stops in the area as well as several bus routes. The MTAs buses and subways currently cost $2.75 per one-way ride and most stations come equipped with OMNI that makes it easy to pay per ride if you don’t want to get a Metrocard. Of course, you can always rent a Citibike, use a rideshare service, or hail a taxi when you need it.
- Five Point dining and nightlife. No need to stay hungry in this part of Manhattan. There are a plethora of choices from dumplings to gelato on the menu in the area, boasting proximity to Chinatown and Little Italy. Some must-try eateries include Nom Wah Tea Parlor or Jing Fong (both in Chinatown) for dim sum. When the craving calls for pasta, look no further than Rubirosa on Mulberry Street. After dinner, you can get your drinks and dance on in the Lower East Side’s bars, clubs, and live music venues. If you find yourself chasing the sun, wash your night down with some bagels and lox at Russ & Daughters Cafe on Orchard Street to set the day right.
- Up and outdoors. This part of Lower Manhattan has a number of greenspaces. In the Five Points area, you’ll be able to enjoy two popular spots. Fun can be found for all at Sara D. Roosevelt Park. You and little ones can enjoy the open green areas for a picnic or enjoy the playground equipment. There’s also courts for basketball, handball, and soccer fields. Wheels are welcome at the park’s skate ramps and rails for boarders and bikers alike. Fido can join the fun off leash too at the dog run. Plus, this is a site for many community events and festivals, so keep a lookout on the calendar for your next fun-filled day at the park. There’s also Columbus Park, which in addition to greenspace, is seen as a cultural hub for Chinese music, dance, and cultural expression. You can also catch a Tai chi class there! No matter where you find yourself, you can’t go wrong with these green spaces.
