This northwestern Brooklyn neighborhood’s bounds stretch from Old Fulton Street to Atlantic Avenue going north to south and Cadman Plaza West to Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the East River going east to west.
Neighboring areas include DUMBO, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, and Downtown Brooklyn.
This puts residents within close proximity to a lot of the phenomenal happenings that make Brooklyn such an exciting place to live. However, you may also want to be privy to the details of and goings-on within the neighborhood, such as:
- Cost of living. The cost of renting a home in this part of Brooklyn is generally on par with neighboring areas. A one-bedroom apartment will be about $3,656 per month on average, and it’s gone up quite a bit in the last year. If you’re hoping to purchase a home, the well-preserved brownstones and carriage homes that are dated prior to the Civil War will set you back a pretty penny. The current median listing price for a home in Brooklyn Heights is at $1.3 million. That said, you’ll be amongst some historic homes as it’s the first city neighborhood to have a protected landmark status.
- Easy commute to Manhattan. You can go from simply seeing a great view of the Manhattan skyline from this neighborhood to being in the midst of bustling Midtown in about 30 minutes. So, if you’re living in Brooklyn and working or needing to travel frequently to Manhattan, you’ll be happy to know you’ll have easy access to transportation options. There’s a number of subway trains, including the A,C,2,3,4,5, and R trains that get you to where you’re going. You could also take a ferry from Brooklyn Heights. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6/ Atlantic Avenue Ferry to Wall Street or the Lower East or take the East River Ferry in nearby DUMBO to get to Wall Street.
- Eats and Drinks. This neighborhood is known for having a plethora of cuisines and dining options, as well as a low-key bar scene. Perhaps a night out with neighbors at Boutros over some sharable Middle Eastern dishes at communal table settings sounds just right. Or, maybe you feel like getting back to NY basics with a coal oven baked slice over at Table 87. This neighborhood won’t leave you hanging when you’re hankering for pad thai, and when that craving hits, you may make your way to Pinto to place your order. Food gifts are always a good choice and picking out some new spices and an order of baklava from Sahadi’s will likely be met with smiles. Even though the bar scene in this part of Brooklyn is a bit more tame than some nearby areas, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a good place to relax and enjoy a round with friends. Try Floyd NY to blow off steam with some indoor bocce ball, bourbon, and beer.
- Along the waterfront. One of the highlights of this neighborhood is the expansive Brooklyn Bridge Park, built on a series of piers on the East River. This greenspace has something for all visitors. Those with families will love to frequent the many playgrounds and take a spin on Jane’s Carousel (which is technically in DUMBO, but still within the park). The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is located just above the park, and it allows for spectacular views of lower Manhattan, Governor’s Island, and Staten Island. As a place to see and be seen, it’s great for sitting, people watching, or jogging/running if that’s more your speed. If you don’t make it all the way to the piers but are still hoping to get some play in, you and your little ones may make a stop at Pierrepont Playground. Pups need playtime too and at Columbia Heights and Vine Street, you’ll find a sizable sanctuary for you and your canine companion(s) to enjoy at Hillside Dog Park.
