Our Top Astoria Moving Tips
Astoria is one of the crown jewels of this borough, bordering along the East River facing Manhattan. Moving inland from the shore, the neighborhood stretches east to West 81st street. Going south to north, it extends from 36th Avenue back to the East River. Nearby, you’ll also be close to Woodside to the east, Sunnyside to the southeast, and Long Island city to the southwest. Beyond its borders, Astoria’s got a lot in store for you, such as:
- Arts and culture. Manhattan’s Upper East Side may have Museum Mile, but across the river, you’ll have your pick of some significant cultural institutions here, too. Featuring the history and art of film, you can visit the exhibitions and even catch a movie screening at the Museum of the Moving Image. Close by, you’ll also take note of Kaufman Astoria Studios, a movie studio that’s been home to the Sesame Street production since 1992. There’s also great sculptural art to be appreciated at the Noguchi Museum, honoring American artist Isamu Noguchi. If you’re ready to catch a stage show but aren’t interested in making your way across the East River to the city’s theater district, you can catch one of the local productions at the Astoria Performing Arts Center. Queens may have a different pace than some of the other NYC boroughs, but it’s not lacking in creativity.
- Food and drink fit for a Queen(s resident). If you like to eat from a diverse plate, you’ve come to the right place. Historically, Astoria has had a large Greek and Middle Eastern population. Currently though, there’s much more of a melting pot of culture running through this thriving neighborhood. That said, you can still get some of the best Greek food in the city here. If you’re wild for moussaka and baklava, then you’re going to want to make your way to the well-known Taverna Kyclades. You also won’t have to travel to Little Italy to get some fresh Italian fare. Locals rave about Cassinelli Food Products, which has its own in-house line of pastas including ravioli, tortellini, sauces, and cheese. Gotta hankering for some grub that’ll please both the meat-eaters and the veg-heads? Comfortland is serving up quirky dishes from breakfast time to when the dinner bell rings. Try their rainbow cookie crumb cake, fresh donuts, or their breakfast po’ boy sandwich to start your day (or save it for later)! Another classic must-go spot in the neighborhood is a great place to share a cold one with your pals: Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden. It’s one of the oldest beer gardens in NYC, serving up Czech and Slovak dishes alongside the pints of hoppy suds.
- Cost of living. Living in NYC has a higher cost than most places you may call home. However, when you compare across boroughs, Queens comes out as one of the more affordable parts of the city to live in. As you consider what your dwellings may be like, you’ll find plenty of pre-war brick apartments, single-family homes, and townhouses in Astoria. Some luxury apartment buildings are in the mix as well. Housing cost-wise, the average rent for a one-bedroom will run about $2,595 in the area. If you’re in the market to purchase a home, the median listing price is currently at $777,500. Both aren’t exactly cheap, but are much more affordable, relatively speaking. What is pretty affordable is getting around from Astoria to other parts of the city. You’ll have ready access to the N and W subway train stops that’ll get you to Midtown Manhattan in about 15 minutes. For those who use air travel frequently, you’ll be happy to know that the M60 express bus will take you to LaGuardia Airport in no time. With that kind of service, you won’t bat an eye at the $2.75 a ride price tag for your easy commute.
- Sanctuary in the city. When you’re ready to break free of the concrete jungle, you won’t have to go far to find greenspace and outdoor recreation. Astoria Park, a 60 acre spot along the East River, boasts playgrounds, a skate park, and an Olympic-sized public outdoor pool. With a historically large Greek population, it’s’ no surprise that a park in the area was erected and named after the capital city of Greece: Athens Square Park. Bring your little one’s there to enjoy a playground flanked by sculptures and large columns. Yet another spot where you can marvel at the art of sculpture is Socrates Sculpture Park. What was once an abandoned riverside landfill and dumpsite was reclaimed by sculptor Mark di Suvero into a thriving artist studio and exhibition space for all to enjoy. No matter what excites or soothes the senses, you’ll find it in Astoria.
