Though there is some disagreement on the official bounds of the neighborhood, it’s generally agreed that Riverdale starts in the north where Yonkers ends then goes south all the way to the Harlem River. East to west, it stretches from Van Cortlandt Park and runs into the Hudson River.
There’s much more to know than where Riverdale starts and ends, however. Keep reading for a few details we think new residents should be privy to:
- Getting around. You’ll have a number of ways to get to and from this neighborhood if you make it your home. With a proximity to the George Washington Bridge, the Henry Hudson Parkway, and Interstate I-97, you’ll have easy access to New Jersey, Manhattan, and Upstate New York with your personal vehicle. Don’t fret though if you don’t have a car of your own. Riverdale residents can also use the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) buses, subway (the 1 train line) and the Metro-North train. Fares will vary (for example, a one-way ticket on the subway is $2.75, but a ride on Metro-North will vary depending on your final destination, typically $4 to $14), but it’s still one of the most economical ways to get around and New Yorkers of all types use it on the daily.
- More square footage for your money. Real estate in these parts can be quite grand to pretty suburban. There are large properties atop the hills that feature grand views of the Hudson River and the gardens that line it. There are also fairly typical single-family houses, co-ops, and apartment buildings in the area. Owning property in Riverdale will run between $400K on the lower end to upwards of $2M for one of the mansions with magnificent views. Renting a place of your own will perhaps be a little below average compared to other parts of the city, but it’s still up there. For a studio, you may be looking at an average of $1,200 a month. A one-bedroom averages about $1,950 per month and can go all the way up to $3K for three bedrooms (but that could look more economical if you’re planning on having roommates). While the prices aren’t shockingly lower than other costly parts of the city, what you get is more space in quaint, quieter surroundings.
- What to do and see. What you won’t find much of in Riverdale is an enviable nightlife. There are casual bars and plenty of dining options. So, if you enjoy a more low-key lifestyle or are bringing a family along for the move, this may be perfectly fine. What Riverdale has in spades is beautiful outdoor space. If you’re fond of the birds and the trees, check out the 50 acres of trees of the black birch, oak, black cherry, and hickory varieties at Riverdale Park Reserve and Wallenberg Forest. The nearby park land is home to a number of bird species, so this may be a great stop for the casual or aspiring birder. For those who fawn over flora and fauna, you may consider a membership to Wave Hill. The home at this location was previously inhabited by some notable names, including Mark Twain and Theodore Roosevelt. What surrounds the home is even more impressive — including botanical gardens, greenhouses, an outdoor art gallery, and space for live performances. Then of course, there’s the gem of the Bronx — Van Cortlandt Park. Several times larger than Central Park, this green space is a paradise for those who enjoy the outdoors. Contained within its bounds, you’ll find Mosholu Golf Course (the only course in NYC) and Gaelic Park, the athletic facility used by the sports teams at Manhattan College. Gaelic Park isn’t just for sports though, it houses a cultural center that has hosted the performances of greats including the Grateful Dead and Deep Purple in the 1970s. It’s hard to deny that this neighborhood has some legendary outdoor space.
- Getting a great education. From elementary to higher education, this neighborhood is known for high standards in learning. For starters, residents here have an 89% higher rate of gaining their Bachelor’s Degree than the national average. And when it comes to growing up here and getting an education, there are a number of highly ranked public and private schools. For instance, Riverdale is the location of several Ivy Preparatory league schools serving Pre-K through 12 grades: Horace Mann School, Riverdale Country School, and Ethical Culture Fieldston School. Plus, younger family members or anyone seeking another degree won’t have to travel far to sign up for college classes at Manhattan College and College of Mount St. Vincent. Any way you slice it, Riverdale is a great place to learn and grow.
